What CNC Workpiece Properties Affect Processing?

 

What properties of CNC workpiece can affect manufacturing?

 

1.    The first, also most important element is hardness.

(1)  In general, the poorer machinability results from:

     The higher rigidity, the more difficult to cut;

     The more impurities;

     The greater hardness of internal particles;  

     Lower rigidity, easy to cause router bit stuck;

So suitable hardness is the precondition to machining.

 

(2)  Before cnc cutting process, we should pretreat cnc workpiece to reach certain and appropriate rigidity, which is neither too high nor too low.

 

2.    Types and chemical composition:

(1)  Categories include metal and nonmetal materials.

(2)  Chemical constitution:

The major standards are: the more carbon content or alloy content, the worse workability; the higher nonmetallic elements, the better workability.

(However, the nonmetallic level is controlled strictly).

 

3.    Ductility and plasticity:

Because ductility is negatively related to hardness, so it has little influence on cutting.

 

4.    Others:

There are some other effective factors, such as forming technology, thermal treatment, metallographic structure, work-hardening tendency, and so on.
