Cutting Tool Life

Can be Affected by Spindle Speed And Processing Velocity

The speed of spindle and machining will influence cutting tool life.

One of our customers, dear Kevin has proved that point.

Kevin has a stone cnc router, and only process stone materials before, such like tablet, grave monument, marble, ceramic tiles, glass, etc. Recently he bought some MDF to do 3d relief sculpture.

Who knows a headache thing happens. After cutting for a while, the material risked black smoke unexpectedly, later cnc bits are even broken. Why with such short cutting tool life?

In the beginning, he thought maybe there was something wrong with diamond stone tools, but still with the same situation after replacing new engraving bits.

Now, Kevin is very confused. Why engrave stone is even much easier than cutting MDF? Actually, it is easy to understand. When machining marble or tiles, we adjust spindle speed to maximum, and with very low carving velocity. It is no good certainly with the same parameters.

For cutting hard work piece, like MDF board, the rate should not be too slow. Or else, straight flute bit will produce a great deal of heat; also, MDF will smoke after meeting heat.

In addition, RPM should not be too high. The higher RPM, the more generated heat is.

Besides cutting tool life can be affected by spindle speed and processing velocity, you maybe also interested in: wood cnc router bits.
