Use Skills of Ball End Cutting Tool

Ball end cutting tool is widely used in many applications, such as 3D relief, end milling, round bottomed lettering, and so on (such as marble relief example).

Excellent engraving effect can't be separately from use skills of ball nose router bit.

1.    Duplication of ball end cutting tool:

(1)  The degree of fineness has much to do with path space.

To ball end diamond tools, we can have ideal degree of finish only overlap rate is more than 98%.

(2)  To solid end mill, the overlapping ratio should be a little higher than other materials.

2.    Engraving depth of ball end cutting tool:

(1)  It needs certain engagement while finishing; or else the surface finish is not smooth.

(2)  Cutting depth is related to work piece processing sclerosing.

Usually, the softer material, the more serious work hardening phenomenon is. Thus, the penetration of diamond stone tools should be larger.

(3)  To steep curve, use the way of surface finish contour;

To rather flat curve, adopt the method of parallel transversal.

The join point of two ways is better at steep side, reducing machined trace.

It can also realized by flowline method.

3.    Path space of ball end cutting tool:

It should maintain constancy, to get the same surface finishment.

4.    Path direction:

Try to in the direction of surface curvature, which is with the biggest change.

We can also achieve by the function of vertical scanning.

Of course, there are many other techniques we should pay more attention and accumulate experience in routing use.

Once we master the skills of ball end router bit, can bring us lots of convenience in practical processing.
